Healthy People Portage County is a voluntary local organization whose mission is to improve the health and well-being of residents. We offer this Walking Guide with the goal of encouraging regular moderate exercise.

Special thanks to historian-librarian Wendell Nelson and Stevens Point city forester Todd Ernster for their guidance in selecting interesting homes, buildings and trees along the way. To find out more about these and many other local homes and buildings, see Wendell Nelson?s books, Houses That Grew and Houses with the Have-Beens, and Thomas Brown?s Gateway to the Pineries. A useful pocket-sized tree book is: Forest Trees of? Wisconsin, by F. G. Wilson. Thanks also to Ministry Heart Care, John Betinis, Laura Betinis, Andrea Rocque, UWSP Design Center (John Smith and Barbara Buckel).
