Mental disorders are real and treatable health conditions. They have a staggering toll on affected individuals and their families. Mental illnesses can affect people of any age, gender, ethnic or racial group, educational, or socioeconomic level. Despite the effectiveness of treatment the majority of persons with mental disorders do not receive mental health services. Research shows that 90% of people who kill themselves have depression or another diagnosable mental or substance abuse disorder. It is said that six lives are greatly affected by each suicide. Healthy People Portage County encourages organizations and individuals interested in preventing suicide to consider prevention and intervention activities that will accomplish the following goals.
